- Cryptococcus neoformansによる皮膚感染症であるが，primary cutaneous cryptococcosisiはきわめて稀である．
- 全身感染症の一局所所見の可能性をまず考慮する必要があり，患者の多くはimmunocompromised hostである．
- 肉芽腫を形成し，異物型の多核巨細胞の細胞質内に貪食された菌体は，円形ないしは卵円形で，その大きさは4-12 μmである．
- 厚い粘液性莢膜（mucin capsule）を形成し，HE染色では白く抜けた小粒子として認められる(インセット左)．
- 莢膜はムチカルミン染色で陽性を示す(インセット右)．（by 山口 浩）
